Chiropractic and Headaches

Headaches and Chiropractic                                                               headache photo: Headache headache.jpg

On August 2, 2013, the American Chiropractic Association released an article titled “Headaches and Chiropractic”, which appeared in several news outlets.   The release, and several associated news articles discuss how chiropractic helps people who suffer from headaches.

The ACA release begins by stating, “If you have a headache, you’re not alone. Nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. Some are occasional, some frequent, some are dull and throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea.”

An article in the Merritt Herald from Canada on July 24, 2013, about chiropractic and headaches starts by asking, “Did you know that one of the most common forms of headache is actually caused by problems in the neck?”

The ACA release reported on research of how chiropractic helps headaches by noting, “A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, N.C., found that spinal manipulation (adjustments) resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.”

Using chiropractic care for headaches is not a common medical procedure. This fact was illustrated in the Merritt Herald article, “Unfortunately, the medical understanding of headaches often does not take into account the chiropractic model, which remains foreign to many within the medical profession.”

The Merritt Herald article also reported that this information is not new, noting that, “In 1995, a team of MDs at Syracuse University established neck problems as the cause of many headaches with scientific, anatomical proof.” The researchers were headed up by Dr. Rothbart, a medical doctor.

In an interview after the research, Dr. Rothbart stated, “Some brilliant people have put their hearts, souls and minds to this (headache) problem and haven’t come up with anything. All we’ve been able to do is treat people with an array of medicines, one after the other, and hope the side effects won’t be too bad. We couldn’t believe it at first. We’ve been able to put together a scientific explanation for how neck structure causes headaches — not all headaches, but a significant number of them. It’s true that chiropractors have been saying this for years. Unfortunately, many (medical) doctors tend to have a jaundiced view of chiropractors, but they were right about headaches.”

Chiropractic Adjustments Benefit Your Immune System

Chiropractic Adjustments

Benefit Your Immune System

An article appearing February 7, 2011, on the online news site “All Voices” describes the way chiropractic helps the immune system to function properly. The article’s author, Debbie Nicholson, begins her article by reporting, “The evidence keeps on growing for receiving wellness care from chiropractors. Chiropractic care aids in decreasing health care costs, health behavior and enhances quality of life.”

In the opening explanation of how the immune system works, Nicholson explains that the immune system and the nervous system are “..directly connected and work as one to develop maximum responses for the body to adjust and heal correctly”. She also notes that any alteration to the function of the nervous system will subsequently have an effect on the function of the immune system.

Nicholson further ties these two systems together by saying, “Misalignments called subluxations of the spine, cause compression and irritation of the nerve pathways influencing organ systems of the body. Subluxations cause physical nerve stress which affects neural control. Researchers have stated that these types of stressful conditions lead to changed rates of immune function and increase susceptibility to numerous diseases.”

The remainder of the article reviews the long history of scientific research that proves what chiropractors have observed in their offices. The author then reviews research from 1992 when it was shown that an adjustment to the thoracic spine (mid back) causes a subsequent elevation of the white blood cell count. This white blood cell count is associated with increased immunity.

The research was performed by Dr. Ronald Petro, PhD, chief of cancer prevention research at New York Preventive Medical Institute and professor of medicine environmental health at New York University. The research examined 107 people who had ongoing chiropractic care and compared them to an average population of people not under chiropractic care. They also reviewed a population of people who were suffering from cancer.

The study showed that, as expected, the people suffering from cancer had an immune function that was 50 percent weaker than the average population. However, when they looked at the population of people under long term chiropractic care, their rate of immunity was 200 percent higher than the average population, and 400 percent higher than those with suppressed immunity suffering from cancer. Dr. Petro stated that, “chiropractic care gives maximum efficiency to whatever genetic abilities you posses, so you can completely resist to the best of your potential.”

In her article, Nicholson also reported on a 2005 study showing that, “chiropractic care could influence basic physiological process that affect oxidative stress and DNA repair”. She emphasizes that this shows that removal of subluxations has a positive affect on health down to the DNA level.

Nicholson notes that children will benefit most from this knowledge as their nervous systems and immune systems are the most impressionable. She states, “The child’s nervous system is required for proper growth and development. There are numerous opportunities when particular parts of the body and brain grow. If the nervous system is not operating correctly, those opportunities could be missed. So it is important that the systems be checked regularly to make sure they are operating at optimal performance. She offers the advice that children should start care as early as possible. She concludes, “Children who receive regular chiropractic care have been demonstrated to have less colds, ear infections and flu. The best time to start is when the child is an infant. Their spines and necks can become very easily misaligned”.

Resolution of Infertility followed by a healthy pregnancy and delivery with Chiropractic.

Resolution of Infertility followed by a healthy pregnancy and delivery with Chiropractic.

In the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health published on March 12, 2012.  there was an article documenting the resolution of infertility in a woman previously diagnosed with a case of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.  Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, a condition resulting from an imbalance of women’s female sex hormones, can lead to infertility and affects approximately 6.6 % of reproductive aged women.

The authors of the study start by reporting that infertility is a widespread problem that affects one in five couples.  Of these it is estimated that 60% are due to a female health problem.  As a result, 9.3 million women seek infertility treatment, at some point during their lives.

In this case, a 29-year-old woman previously diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and infertility sought chiropractic care.  The study states that she had been unable to become pregnant for six months.  She had been to a medical practitioner one week earlier but had heard that chiropractic care could be helpful, and then she sought chiropractic care.

During a chiropractic examination it was determined that subluxations were present in multiple areas of the woman’s spine, resulting in nerve system interference.  A series of chiropractic spinal adjustments were initiated to correct the subluxations.

The study reports that after two months of care of the patient was told by her medical doctor that she was pregnant.  It was estimated that the woman became pregnant between the second and fifth chiropractic visit.  The study reports that the pregnancy was normal and that the woman delivered a healthy 6 lbs. 7 oz. baby girl after an all natural labor.

In their discussion and conclusion the authors discussed how subluxations could cause infertility by stating, “A subluxation is characterized by a dysfunction of the nervous system that results in widespread physiological changes and altered health status.”  The authors discussed the additional benefits in this case by noting, “Following initiation of chiropractic care, the patient not only became pregnant, but also reported improvements in many facets of her life, including improved sleep, better dietary choices, increased water consumption, and an improvement in her ability to exercise.”

Child with Bedwetting, and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) helped with Chiropractic.

Child with Bedwetting, and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) helped with Chiropractic.

In the January 30, 2012 issue of the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research, there was a case study documenting the resolution of bedwetting and improvement of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The authors of the study note that between five and six million children over the age of 6 are affected by bedwetting in the United States.  They also report that it is estimated that approximately 1 and 110 children in the United States suffer from ASD, and it is found to be more common among boys than in girls.

In this case, a six year old boy who was bedwetting was brought to the chiropractor.  At age 2, he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and exhibited the symptoms of that problem he arrived for care.

The boy’s mother reported that her pregnancy with her son was difficult, and she noted that she had taken Loevoxyl for hypothyroidism throughout the pregnancy.  She also stated that the child’s hospital delivery and birth were traumatic, resulting in a cesarean section.  The boy’s mother reported that through his childhood so far, he had multiple falls, and suffered from numerous bouts of ear infections.

A chiropractic examination was performed, which led to the conclusion of the presence of a subluxation in the upper neck, (atlas).  Chiropractic adjustments were then initiated for correction of the atlas subluxation, and follow-up examination procedures were performed during the course of care.

The mother noted that her son had completely stopped wetting his bed after the first visit.  As care continued, she also reported that she observed a 70% improvement in his ASD, and noticed that he had performed better in school and displayed greater social skills.

In their conclusion the authors wrote, “This case study explores the possible link between the objective reduction of vertebral subluxation and the resolution of nocturnal enuresis, as well as the subjective improvement in the behavioral patterns of a child diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.”

TV’s Dr. Phil – Gets Regular Chiropractic Care. Who Knew?

Someone brought this to my attention recently. Dr Phil did an episode on how chiropractic is great for your life. It’s nice to get some good press so I thought I’d share it with you:

‘GET REAL’ with Chiropractic…

American TV personality and psychologist Dr. Phil doesn’t hold punches when it comes to advising his guests on living a more balanced, principled life.  So it should come as no surprise how he feels about Chiropractic.

On a recent show with personal Chiropractor and author Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, Dr. Phil touts the benefits he’s experienced from regular care.   “I’ve been seeing a Chiropractor a couple times a week for the past 10 years…”  And you can bet it wasn’t for a bad back.  Dr. Phil knows Chiropractic care goes beyond helping aches and pains.  It transforms your entire health and LIFE for the better – exactly what his show is all about.

If you’re frustrated with your current level of health, maybe it’s time to get real with a new paradigm shift.  As Dr. Fab says, “we are all born with a natural ability to heal.” Chiropractic care simply brings it out.  And if it’s good for Dr. Phil, it could be good for you too!

The key here is the benefit to you from REGULAR adjustments. Just like anything else, brushing your teeth, exercise, eating healthy, it takes a regular repeated practice to experience results. I make it incredibly easy and affordable for you and your family to get regular adjustments. But remember YOUR life is YOUR responsibility, you need to step up and make decisions about how you are going to live your life. I hope that one of those decisions will be to make regular adjustments a part of your new and improved life.

See you at your next adjustment!

Infertility? How could Chiropractic possibly help?

How could Chiropractic possibly help with Infertility?

By correcting mis-communication in your nerve system!

Chiropractic is NOT a “treatment” for back pain, neck pain, or any other condition or disease!

Chiropractic IS about detecting and removing interference to the flow of the life-giving energy which is communicated by your nerve system!  This energy keeps us all alive, and functioning, and healthy.

When you have interference to the proper flow of this energy, dysfunction, symptoms and disease will show up in your body.

Since this energy is communicated throughout your body by your nerve system, misalignment of the spinal bones (vertebrae) can cause blockage or mis-communication of this energy.  If your nerve system can’t communicate properly with all the organs and systems in your body, it is like having a scrambled cell phone conversation – where you can’t quite make out what the other person is saying.

If this is happening in your body, how can you possibly have optimal function, and good health?

If you are not currently being checked on a regular basis for nerve interference caused by spinal mis-alignments, contact the office!  I make it make it easy, affordable and convenient to get Chiropractic Care!
